Cavities, also known as dental caries, are a common problem that can cause various harms to the overall health of the mouth and body. Some of the dangers of cavities include:
  • Pain and Sensitivity: Cavities often cause pain and sensitivity in the teeth, especially when exposed to hot, cold, sweet, or sour foods or drinks.
  • Tooth Infection: If caries is left untreated, bacteria can penetrate into the tooth pulp (the tissue of nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth), causing infection and painful swelling.
  • Tooth Decay: Caries can damage the tooth structure, including the enamel (hard outer layer of the tooth), dentin (the middle layer of the tooth), and eventually cause damage to the root of the tooth.
  • Tooth Abscess: A severe tooth infection can lead to the formation of an abscess around the tooth root or gums. An abscess is a pus-filled pocket that is very painful and can cause serious health problems if left untreated.
  • Loss of Teeth: If severe caries is not treated, the tooth may have to be extracted due to irreparable damage.
  • Eating and Speech Disorders: Cavities or decayed teeth can interfere with a person's ability to chew food properly or speak clearly.
  • Spread of Infection: An untreated dental infection can spread to other areas of the body through the bloodstream.
  • Immune System Disorders: Chronic dental infections can affect the immune system and cause more serious health problems.
Therefore, it is important to maintain healthy teeth and gums by diligently brushing your teeth twice a day, using dental floss every day, avoiding excessive sugary foods and drinks, and having regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings by a dentist. If there are signs of cavities or other dental health problems, immediately consult a dentist to get the right treatment.
